Environmental Impact
During the planning stage of each project, an environmental impact assessment (EIA) is conducted to identify the project’s environmental and other effects in accordance with the precautionary principle (Principle 15 of the United Nations Rio Declaration on Environmental Protection and Development, 2023), the specifications of the LLP, Kazakhstan Lubricants Refinery environmental management system, and the Republic of Kazakhstan’s laws. Throughout the design phase, each project is subject to public hearings, which include feedback from administrative, governmental, and regulatory bodies, research institutes, public associations, the local community, and the media.
LLP, Kazakhstan Lubricants Refinery is committed to working responsibly and with minimal environmental impact. We adhere to strict international environmental rules and are aggressively lowering GHG emissions. Our significant environmental goals for 2022 included continuing to work on GHG emission reduction strategies and joining the CDP (previously the Carbon Disclosure Project), an important tool for firms to publish their environmental impact and risk management.
Environment Management
The environmental management system of LLP, Kazakhstan Lubricants Refinery has been certified to meet the international standard ISO 14001:2019. To maintain the Company’s environmental safety, all business activities are guided by a risk-based strategy. LLP, Kazakhstan Lubricants Refinery is responsible for environmental monitoring and industrial environmental control. The environmental impact of industrial activities is evaluated at each stage of the process, and it is essential for making management and investment decisions.
LLP, Kazakhstan Lubricants Refinery undertakes a complete study of the environmental implications of planned and ongoing production operations, taking into account all areas of ecosystem impact as well as the system’s specific characteristics. Based on the evaluation results, the best technologies are implemented at each step of the project to reduce negative consequences.
LLP, Kazakhstan Lubricants Refinery prioritizes environmental regulations. The company’s professionals actively discuss almost every draft law in this field. When planning new projects, the corporation organizes public hearings as part of the State Environmental Expertise program, during which it informs interested parties about the potential environmental consequences of the proposed activity and offers access to supporting documents.
Utilization and neutralization of waste
The Kazakhstan Environmental Code mandates waste owners to either ensure their management by transferring their garbage to commercial companies that execute waste management operations, or to handle their waste safely themselves. On August 6, 2021, the Republic of Kazakhstan Ministry of Ecology, Geology, and Natural Resources and LLP, Kazakhstan Lubricants Refinery renewed their memorandum of cooperation for environmental protection, updating the amounts for 2022-2023. The goal is to reduce, and eventually eradicate, contaminated land and incorrect waste disposal. In compliance with the conditions of the Memorandum, work is being done to process and dispose of historical trash utilizing the biological.
Reclamation of oil-contaminated soil and oil products, as well as the use of an energy-storing additive based on humate-containing composite materials. The Company is constantly developing strategies for managing environmental activities and allocating the necessary resources for environmental protection, particularly for environmental costs such as paying taxes for regulatory emissions, costs for environmental protection measures, insurance, costs for environmental compensation measures, investments in environmental impact prevention, and so on. The dynamics of higher compensation for emissions into the atmosphere were not observed from 2021 to 2022.
